Overview
A waffle chart turns a part-to-whole split into a 10×10 grid of 100 squares, each one worth exactly one percentage point. A category holding 38% of the total claims 38 squares, filled in one solid, countable block — not a wedge you have to judge by eye. It does the same job as a pie or donut chart, but reads more literally: because every square is an identical unit, a viewer can verify a share by counting rather than estimating an angle or an arc length.
That literalness is why the format tests so well for accuracy, and why it holds up with more categories than a pie chart can. A 3% slice on a pie is a sliver nobody can read; a 3% share on a waffle is still three whole, visible squares. It's also inherently square, which makes it a natural fit for a LinkedIn post or an Instagram tile without any cropping.
The trade-off is precision at the edges: a waffle chart rounds every share to the nearest whole square, so two categories at 24.6% and 25.4% both render as roughly a quarter of the grid. When the exact decimal matters more than the visual proportion, a table or a labelled bar chart is the more honest choice.

How it works
Each category's share of the total is converted into a whole number of squares out of 100, using a rounding method that guarantees the squares always add up to exactly 100 even after rounding every category individually.

Past 8 categories, several 1-2 square slivers compete for attention and the grid stops reading as a clean split. Group the smallest into "Other."
A waffle chart rounds to the nearest whole square (1% of the grid). If the story hinges on 24.6% vs 25.4%, use a table instead.
Two similarly-coloured categories next to each other in the grid are hard to tell apart square by square. Pick a theme with clearly distinct hues.
